‘Beyond the Wall’ had plenty of spectacular moments. Yet it was also abundant with contrived story beats, the worst of which was Benjen Stark’s timely arrival.

For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, Jon decided to continue fighting the Army of the Dead when Daenerys offered him the chance to escape. Despite then being dragged into the icy depths of the lake, he managed to resurface unscathed. It was at this moment, surrounded by the Dead with no chance of escape, that Jon was saved by his undead uncle.

The whole scenario felt deeply contrived, and Benjen’s reasoning for not going with Jon was laughably feeble. Such a reunion should have had far more emotional impact, but instead the scene felt rushed and nonsensical.
