Fans of the legendary animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender so desperately want Netflix's upcoming live-action series to be great, but if we're being totally honesty with ourselves, we all know better, right?

While it'll almost certainly improve upon M. Night Shyamalan's wretched cinematic adaptation and boasts quite the accomplished and diverse cast, there are still so, so many hurdles to giving Avatar the live-action treatment it deserves.

And considering that Netflix recently bungled their much anticipated Cowboy Bebop adaptation, enough that they cancelled it mere weeks after it aired, it's tough to be anything more than anxious for their Avatar show.

Plus, given that the animated series' creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, stepped down as showrunners amid "creative differences" and later cited a "negative and unsupporting" relationship with Netflix, things aren't looking so good.

Everyone will be crossing their fingers and toes for this to be a pleasant surprise, but you're absolutely advised to go in with basement-low expectations. And even if it has a promising start, the anxiety of waiting for Netflix to screw it up will make it a nervous sit regardless.

Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres sometime in 2023.
