10 Worst Breaking Bad Episodes

3. Buyout

Breaking Bad
AMC

The sixth episode in season five, Buyout was written by Gennifer Hutchison and directed by Colin Bucksey, and takes place immediately after Walt, Jesse and Todd's methylamine train heist.

One of the overarching themes of the episode is the effects of Todd's heinous murder of a young child who was a witness to their train heist. Whilst this is really where things start to unravel for Jesse with all of the emotional weight of what he had seen, it's also an important moment for Walt as he continues to crack on with business, delivering his infamous "empire building" line in the episode.

An otherwise run-of-the-mill cooldown episode is made extremely awkward however near the end, when Walt, Skylar and Jesse share an evening meal. Aaron Paul is clearly having a great time and it is obviously designed to be one of the more awkward scenes in the season, but Skylar's bragging about having an affair and then storming off is one of those classic moments that fans point to as the reason for their loathing for the character.

What's more, it's also a scene that feels completely out of place with the themes of guilt and loss that are so powerfully conveyed during the train heist and in its immediate aftermath.
