11 Times Doctor Who Reinvented Itself

Years after the original Doctor Who had ended, a joint production with the United States gave rise to a brand new TV movie. Known only as Doctor Who, nearly every aspect of the series was overhauled. There was a new Doctor, a new Master, and a significantly altered TARDIS interior. The adventure was released as a single two hour movie with commercial breaks, a format the series had never used.

The were other elements that seemed to betray an American influence. The story was set in California, it had a lengthy high-speed car chase, and for the first time, the Doctor romantically kissed someone. Lots of fans were unhappy with these developments, but interestingly, many of them anticipated things that revived series went on to do years later.

The show also introduced the idea that the Doctor was half human. This revelation has been ignored ever since, but it's likely that if the hoped-for series had taken off, it would have gone a lot further.

The movie represented a massive new direction for the show, and would be much higher on this list it had actually gone on to become a series as intended.
