Terrence Hardiman played Hawthorne in the Eleventh Doctor episode The Beast Below. He was in charge of security aboard the Starship UK, acting on orders from Liz Ten to direct the Star Whale via torture. Thankfully, Amy Pond was able to put a stop to this horrific practice.

Hardiman was well-known in his career for playing austere and tough characters, though his portrayals often allowed multi-dimensional interpretations of seemingly irredeemable people. For audiences of a certain age, he would be immediately known for his role as The Demon Headmaster in the '90s, as well as his take on a Grand Wizard in The Worst Witch.

He was an experienced stage actor, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company early on. He also did a lot of work in audiobooks and narration, as well as appearing in a 3D movie for the BFI in 2019.

Hardiman died in April 2023, at 86 years of age.
