John Nettleton appeared in the Seventh Doctor serial Ghost Light as the Reverend Ernest Matthews. The ill-fated Reverend would find himself transformed into an ape and put on display, having challenged Josiah Smith's theories on evolution. He would however probably be best known to many as Sir Arnold Robinson in both Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister.

He appeared in dozens of films and television series throughout his career, though he was particularly famous to younger audiences for his narration work on Blue Peter. In the '60s and '70s, he lent his voice to narrating children's historical stories, while the action played out via illustration.

He and his wife, Deirdre Doon, were both members of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. He died in July 2023, at 94 years of age.
