Often guest stars burst onto a television set to be greeted by rapturous applause and the socially accepted amazement at a celebrity being present in the room. Think Brad Pitt on Friends. Or Reese Witherspoon on Friends. Or even Bruce Willis on Friend.

My God, Friends had a lot of celebrity cameos.

Alas this is not the case with director Guillermo Del Toro. Firstly, It’s Always Sunny has no studio audience so no eruption of clapping and cheering. But Del Toro was also different from many celebrity guest stars, as under layers of costume and make up it wasn’t actually clear that it was Del Toro at all.

Del Toro initially appeared as the patriarch of the McPoyle family in season 8’s ‘The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre’, however his greater appearance came when he reprised the role for ‘McPoyle vs Ponderosa: Trial of the Century’.

Clad in what appeared to be a man-sized Nordic leprechaun outfit, with a glassy eye and an incomprehensible accent, Del Toro is called to the stand by Charlie in order to support his Bird Law theory. With a bird under his hat that he can control, the trial descends into chaos, but realistically was it going to end any other way?

Certainly, Del Toro’s other-worldy films such as Pan’s Labyrinth prepared him for the surreal weirdness of his It’s Always Sunny guest role.
