12 Critically Reviled Sci-Fi TV Shows (That Weren't Actually That Bad)
3. The Langoliers
Stephen King adaptations have always been a mixed bag.
Particularly in the nineties, a general fatigue with the prolific scribe’s seemingly
inexhaustible back catalogue being converted to celluloid faster than viewers could
keep track left critics a little too eager to dismiss the adaptations
themselves.
This quick draw dismissal came solely as a result of critical frustration with the author’s rate of output rather than any deal breaking issues with the shows themselves, as evidenced in this underrated adaptation of the author’s time-twisting sci-fi The Langoliers from 1997.
Directed by Fright Night helmer and Spiderman namesake Tom Holland, this strange and eerier miniseries benefits from a solid central turn by David Morse as its taciturn hero, as well as some scene-stealing hamminess from Bronson Pinchot as the unintentional villain of the piece.
Okay, so the effects are more than a little naff by modern standards and the whole affair drags a little, but all in all this one is nonetheless an underrated gem worth seeking out for its oddness and offbeat tone.
