Barton Scully, played by Beau Bridges and Provost of the hospital where Masters and Johnson work, steadily became one of the most fascinating and tragic characters on the show, as he tried to hide the fact he was gay in a time when homosexuality was still terribly misunderstood and vilified.

While he provided one of the most dramatic arcs on the series, for both he and his wife Margaret, it could all have been rather different. Bridges was only supposed to be on the show for the pilot episode, but the producers were so impressed with his performance that they ended up developing his character further to keep him around. Also, the character isn’t based on just one person, but is actually an amalgamation of two real-life people.
