4. "I See You"

It is no secret that BoJack Horseman hated his mother, but when she died, he went through a conflict of emotions. These he spoke about at length throughout his eulogy, with much of the speech centered around the last words his mother spoke to him before she died. “I see you.”

BoJack had been trying to figure out what she meant by that. His first thought was that there were no final judgements or criticisms as she went out, as he expected, just simple recognition. She could have just been saying it in a literal sense that she physically saw him, or she may not have even been talking to him at all.

He openly admitted that it was probably a waste of time trying to figure out what she meant, as it likely ultimately meant nothing. However, he settled on thinking that she was recognizing that she, BoJack, and her husband were all drowning, and couldn’t save each other, but at least they were drowning together. In this, at least BoJack had some connection and closure on his relationship with his mom right at the end.

However, as he was speaking, he realized that she wasn’t saying “I see you” at all, she was just reading the sign of the Intensive Care Unit they were in. This final connection with his mother was cruelly snatched away from him, there was no moment of recognition, instead the only thing he had now was the knowledge that the window for such a relationship had closed on him for good.
