3. Ruthie Isn't Real

In spite of her power career that had typically left her no time to herself, or to nurture a relationship or a family, Princess Carolyn desperately wanted children. She had already been shown to have had a miscarriage at the start of season four, and a few episodes later she was pregnant again.

‘Ruthie’ was an episode named for PC’s great-great-granddaughter, who addressed her school class in the future with a story about her ancestor. In spite of her struggles, and miscarriages, this at least confirmed a happy ending, right?

Throughout the episode, PC lost her unborn child, something that she confirmed to Ralph as the fifth time it happened. She, understandably, didn’t handle it well, and she ended up breaking up with Ralph. Ruthie kept promising a happy ending, leaving the audience safe in the knowledge that everything worked out for Princess Carolyn in the end, but all this did was set them up for one of the most devastating episode endings ever.

Sat on the couch in her office, PC told BoJack that after a particularly horrible day, she pictured her great-great-granddaughter talking about her in the future. This made her feel better, and like everything would work out, but as BoJack pointed out, it was fake. Ruthie was never real, just something that Princess Carolyn used to make herself feel better. It didn’t make the audience feel better.
