Perhaps the most exciting new TV series to come in 2017, American Gods will adapt Nail Gaiman's beloved novel, delivering a small-screen battle between the old Gods and the new.

With Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal) and Michael Green (Logan) running the show, and Gaiman himself quite heavily involved, it's got the makings of being TV's next big fantasy series. It has an excellent cast too, not least Ricky Whittle in the role of protagonist Shadow Moon, along with Emily Browning, Pablo Schreiber, Gillian Anderson, and Crispin Glover.

The standout, though, is Ian McShane, who'll be playing the enigmatic Mr Wednesday in what is surely dream casting. It's hard to think of anyone better for the role, and McShane should excel at bringing Wednesday to life.

He's an actor of real gravitas, but also possesses the necessary charm and twinkle-in-his-eye that Mr Wednesday requires. He's mysterious, strange, intense, devious, grumpy, and very powerful; it's easy to imagine McShane ticking not just one or some of those boxes, but every single one of them and then some, all while looking the part. Wednesday is a wonderful character, and this is absolutely perfect casting.
