12 Star Trek Characters Who Changed The Most

11. Saru

Saru may have only been in the Star Trek universe for a relatively short time, yet in that time he has displayed a huge character growth that is comparable with those who have been around for years.

When he is introduced, he is the test subject for the new Kelpian race. His line demonstrating that Kelpian's are bred to sense the coming of death certainly made for a powerful moment in the first trailer, yet in the first few episodes, this really was all that Saru had to offer to Discovery.

Then, over the course of the first season, he begins to change. The Saru that commands Discovery on her return journey from the mirror universe is a different beast altogether, full now of a confidence borne from experience.

Going into the second season, he has become a much more capable officer and, finally, more accepting of Burnham's presence on board the ship. His physical evolution after the ship's encounter with the Ba'ul marks one of his greatest changes, losing some of the emotional control that he had built up around himself after the loss of the Shenzou.

Saru is now in a strong position to take command of Discovery going into the third season, being one of the most experienced officers aboard. He may be the only Kelpian in Starfleet, which he may compound by becoming the first Kelpian captain.
