Being married to one of the most hardened minds in the FBI is a dangerous game to play, and Haley Hotchner learned that the hard way in '100', the ninth episode in season five.

Having been locked in a deadly series of cat-and-mouse games and standoffs before, audiences were used to seeing the deranged mind of serial killer George 'The Reaper' Foyet squaring off against special agent Aaron Hotchner. Hotchner's strained relationship with his ex-wife, Haley, was also a sign to audiences that things weren't going to end well for the couple.

In a tense finale where Haley gets taken by The Reaper, 'Hotch' and his colleagues are constantly shown to be chasing shadows and always one step behind Foyet, lending a sense of helplessness to the whole sequence. When Hotch picks up one last phone call from Haley, audiences already know what's about to go down.

Whilst there is still this unshakeable feeling that someone is going to come out of nowhere and save the day, knowing the insanity of Foyet keeps this helplessness suspended over the scene throughout the couple's final exchange. Haley's final instructions to Hotch and Foyet's bulking figure appearing behind her confirms what most should have expected, but boy did it still sting...
