12 Upcoming New HBO Series To Be Excited About
1. The Plot Against America
Two of America’s heavyweight creative forces - David Simon and Philip Roth - collide in this adaptation of the late author’s novel. David Simon reunites with his The Wire co-creator Ed Burns to bring this miniseries to the small screen. There’s much to be excited about here, from the creative team to the source material to the stellar cast.
Roth’s novel is set in an alternate past wherein famous pilot Charles Lindbergh won the presidency and set the USA on a course for populist fascism - a story that maybe, just maybe, has a little added relevance in today’s climate. Coen brothers regular John Turturro and the revitalised Winona Ryder are the notable names in the cast.
Roth was an extraordinary writer, and adaptations of his works often fail to recapture the heft of his prose. Few can do righteous indignation like David Simon, though, and his HBO track record (The Deuce, Generation Kill, Treme, and more) speaks for itself.
HBO confirm this one to be a limited run, so presumably it’ll be a true recreation of the novel, rather than a reinterpretation of the story a la The Handmaid’s Tale. With the sheer amount of talent involved, it’s hard to imagine this being anything less than stellar, and hopefully a fitting tribute to one of the 20th century’s great men of letters.
