13 CW Actors Who Deserve An Emmy Nomination
5. Grant Gustin - The Flash
Grant Gustin may just be The CW's strongest performer. Yes, that's a bold statement to make but it isn't an unfounded one.
In the last five years, the young actor has produced a string of outstanding performances as Barry Allen, bringing a relatable warmth to The Flash that we simply aren't used to seeing from our favourite superheroes.
Though the material he was given over the last year wasn't quite as strong as some of the earlier installments, he did have a lot more to work with here than he did in Season 4. As The Flash, he was as heroic and hopeful as ever, but as Barry, he had a new challenge - one that, like always, he had no problem rising to.
As the arrival of the character's daughter was the emotional heart of the season, it was that narrative that constantly produced the most fruitful moments. Of course, it was a change to see Gustin portray a parental role, but he absolutely thrived, bouncing off both Jessica Parker-Kennedy and on-screen partner Candice Patton incredibly well - with all three of them radiating natural familial chemistry.
However, his most impressive performance came when Barry discovered that Nora had been working with his archenemy Eobard Thawne, as he successfully managed to sum up all of the character's heartbreak and disappointment with a single crushed look.
The most human superhero on TV, Gustin never fails to move us as The Flash and it's about time that he received the recognition he deserves.
