14 Great Futurama Characters In Only One Episode

As it’s set 1000 years from the present time, Futurama has the creative freedom to play around with near enough any story it wants. In this case, the crew’s ship is sucked deep down in the sea from being tethered to a large mammal. In exploring for food underwater, Fry encounters a mermaid but is the only one to see it. And since mermaids are apparently still mythological in the future, none of the other crew believes his sightings and blame it on ‘Ocean Madness’.

But Fry did not just imagine the mermaid as she returns to the ship that night to meet him. After giving him a device which allows him to communicate underwater, the two get to know each other. The mermaid’s name is Umbriel - a sweet, polite woman who believes every word from Fry such as him claiming land is inhabited with “Land Sea Lions”.

The two engage romantically and explore the depths of the modern ocean together. You immediately know the bond between them won’t last since they’re of two greatly different species (and he is way out of her league) but it’s an enjoyable love story none the less.

Fry decides that he will stay living under the sea with Umbriel and her family, even with the knowledge that he will never be able to visit the surface again. But after finding out the (hilariously odd) way that mermaids have intercourse, he flees whilst he has the chance.
