14 Tales From The History Of Doctor Who From William Hartnell To Jodie Whittaker
13. The Adventures Of The Doctor Of Sherwood Forest
When Patrick Troughton took over the lead role in Doctor Who in 1966, he had already in fact starred as a famous figure from history by this stage. He had appeared, back in 1953, as Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest.
He had in fact been the first actor to play him on television, thanks to six half-hour productions by the BBC. He was, thanks both to these and later roles, a well-known face when he sat up from the very first regeneration, helping to propel the show onward past the departure of William Hartnell.
Flashing forward to Robot of Sherwood, one of Peter Capaldi's Twelve's adventure, an image of Troughton as Robin Hood is shown on screen when the TARDIS is compiling a list of the history of Doctor Who, not just allowing Troughton to feature in the episode, but also continuing the story of Robin Hood - regardless of the century it is based in!
