8. BoJack Horseman - Don’t Stop Dancing

BoJack Horseman’s 11th episode is always an interesting affair, although interesting in BoJack’s case that means devastatingly depressing. Previous episode 11’s have given us ‘do you think I’m a good person?’, the incident on the boat in New Mexico, Sarah Lynn’s death and Bea’s Alzheimer’s, and this is another wonderfully dark half an hour to join that list.

It centres around BoJack’s loosening grip on reality as his drug problems spiral, and culminates in him violently choking his co-star Gina. However, the high point of the episode comes with the musical number: Don’t Stop Dancing.

The song (sang by Gina) charts the highs and lows of BoJack’s life and lets fans relive the best parts of the show. The catchy tune is also a scathing assessment of BoJack’s quest for fame and the ultimate futility of it. Following on from the artistically quiet ending of the previous episode where BoJack stares emptily at the balloon of himself as Philbert, it’s particularly effective.

The whole sequence is a testament to everything animation can be. It’s colourful, whimsical and meaningful all at once. It pushes the genre to its full potential, and was one of many great moments BoJack gave us this year.
