4. Fawlty Towers
wikipediaBasil Fawlty is an eternally stressed and manic hotel manager who spends his days frantically overreacting about issues that are usually created by his own incompetence, and John Cleeses performance as the Fawlty Towers owner is unquestionable one of the most captivating comedic performances ever to be displayed on the small-screen. In a business so reliant on clientele, Fawlty is forced to attempt to repress his true begrudging feelings towards those around him, which definitely does not come naturally. Basil is joined at the hotel by his insistent wife Sybil, waitress Polly and the frequently confused Spanish waiter Manuel. All of which regularly frustrate Basil and will be forced to listen to his latest rant regarding his disapproval of the current task he has been forced into due to their inadequacy. He has also given Sybil a whole host of unflattering nicknames due to her persistent nagging; these include my little piranha fish and the sabre-toothed tart. While the outlandish actions performed by Cleese make Basil the centre piece of the show, the other actors also deserve a great deal of praise for the roles they uphold within the sitcom. Andrew Sachs character Manuel became an instant cult hero across the country due to his slapstick errors that would constantly play on Basils tolerance.
