15 Best British Sitcoms Of All Time

8. Dad's Army

wikipediawikipediaDad€™s Army offers a much-appreciated lighter account of World War II. Here we have a sitcom that explores the otherwise unfamiliar perspective of a Home Guard platoon, made up of men deemed too old or not fit enough to be considered for military service. The show has an exceptional way of exhibiting both the good and bad qualities in each of its characters, and viewers will chuckle away as they witness a group of misfits making continuous clumsy errors while maintaining the greatest respect for the integrity and patriotism that seeps through each member of the platoon. The sitcom€™s finest quality is the diversity in characters and the comical interactions this presents. A fine example is the relationship shared between the easily frustrated and pompous commander Capt. George Mainwaring and the Home Guard€™s youngest member, Pvt. Frank Pike. Pike€™s careless youthful attitude often grates on the captain and he will commonly refer to Pike as a €˜stupid boy€™ €“ this incidentally became the show€™s most famous catchphrase. The comedy has also formulated awareness and respect for those that have registered their services to real Home Guard platoons - still offering help to their country in the only way possible due to any personal restrictions.
