6. I'm Sorry - Catastrophe

Catastrophe Sharon Horgan

Episode: Episode 6

Catastrophe may well be the best sitcom on television, and certainly the most criminally underwatched. The brainchild of Pulling's Sharon Horgan and Twitter genius Rob Delaney, who write and star in the series, it's a hilarious, gross, and all-too-real look at adult relationships.

Season 3 continued to explore new ground in their lives, with Rob's alcoholism (Delaney himself was an alcoholic) and the death of Sharon's father, somehow finding room for incredible comedy within that.

The finale further pulled at those threads: driving home, a drunk Sharon decides she wants a pizza, so gets out of the car at a set of traffic lights. Rob drives back round the block, and another car smashed into him. He's mostly unhurt, but as Sharon dashes over he cries: "Are the police coming? They're going to give me a breathalyser, and I won't pass."

In this moment the series totally leaves behind any notion it has of being a sitcom, instead becoming a horribly hard-hitting drama. Watching Rob's face crumple as he mutters "I'm sorry", and the closing moments as the pair hold each other, is completely devastating, and shows just how powerful this 'sitcom' is.
