Episode: Kimmy Can't Help You!

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's third season doesn't quite reach the heights of its first two, but it's still one of the outright funniest and weirdest sitcoms on TV. However, it's also a series with a surprising amount of emotion and depth, and in a seemingly throwaway line gets deeper and darker than ever.

Discussing a future with the Reverend, whom she hopes to marry, Wendy (played by the brilliant Laura Dern) tries to convince Kimmy to sign the divorce papers, and says: "It’s kind of sophisticated, if you think about it. An evening in Manhattan with my lover’s wife. It sounds like a Noel Coward play.”

To this, Kimmy snaps back: "If Noel Coward was really a coward who rapes everybody.”

The show has shown the trauma of what happened to Kimmy in the bunker, and alluded to "weird sex stuff" before, but this is the first time it's actually mentioned sexual assault. It's a big moment for the show and for Kimmy, which speaks to the past of the show, shedding further light on the character and her actions, and its/her future.

Being Kimmy Schmidt, the line is also played for some laughs, showing just how well the show can tread that incredibly fine line and use it to its real advantage.
