15 Doctor Who Actors Who Died In 2020

4. John Sessions

Doctor Who Gus Mummy On The Orient Express
BBC

John Sessions appeared in one of the best episodes of the Peter Capaldi era, but we never actually saw his face onscreen.

That episode was Series 8's Mummy On The Orient Express, in which the Twelfth Doctor and Clara pay a visit to a futuristic space version of the titular train, and end up doing battle with a deadly mummy that kills its victims in 66 seconds.

Eventually, it's revealed that this whole scenario has been orchestrated by Gus, a mysterious supercomputer who wants to use the mummy for his own gain. Gus was voiced by Sessions, and while the character is quite thin, his performance helped turn Gus into a figure that fans still ask questions about to this day.

Away from the TV show, Sessions appeared in a handful of Doctor Who audio dramas, and on top of this, he was also considered to play the Eighth Doctor, a role that ultimately went to Paul McGann.

Sessions passed away on 2 November, aged 67.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
