So far, we’ve had intros that shy away from the cast's faces so here’s one that goes completely in the opposite direction.
Orange is the New Black’s opening credits showcase many mugshots by female prisoners. Focusing on their eyes and mouths, the incarcerated women smile, stare, and grimace at the camera. The fascinating thing is these are not mugshots of the cast, but images of actual ex-felons.
Designed by Thomas Cobb Group, each woman was asked to think of a peaceful place, a person who made them laugh, and something they wanted to forget. Mugshots usually capture people at their worst; the images dehumanise the person behind them. However, OITNB celebrates these women, while also hinting at the traumatic experiences they’ve faced.
