20 Best Superman TV Episodes Of All Time

8. "Brave New Metropolis" - Superman: The Animated Series

Superman Lois Clark

Seeing as how Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster originally envisioned him as a bald villain before turning him into the hero we know today, it's become almost tantalizing for writers to see how the character may function under a darker shade. The "evil Superman" story is one that has been done time and time again, but few of them are as good as "Brave New Metropolis".

Written by Stan Berkowitz, this episode sees Lois get thrown into an alternate universe, where Superman is a dictator ruling over Metropolis' slums and is joined in these efforts by Lex Luthor. It takes a few cues from a Superboy episode called "Roads Not Taken", which was also written by Berkowitz.

"Brave New Metropolis" creates a grandiose scale, with its almost Richard Wagner-esque musical score and overhauling Metropolis into a Batman: The Animated Series art deco vibe. Not to mention the rather creepy statue that sits dead center in the city, with Superman and Luthor's heads joined together and a block of text that hauntingly reads "The Men Who Saved Metropolis".
