9. "Descent" - Smallville
Season 7 of Smallville featured the final confrontation between longtime friends turned enemies Clark and Lex, as their relationship boiled over from merely estranged to bitter rivals. But none of it would have happened without this dark chapter, known as "Descent".
It's a fitting name, as the opening features an emotionally charged confrontation between Lex and his father Lionel. The conclusion of this, much to Lionel's twisted pride, sees Lex fulfil his own destiny and kill his father by sending him hurtling out of a window into the streets of Metropolis.
It's only one part of a truly monumental episode. Lex spends the entirety of this episode in a struggle with his own darkness, which Clark tries once more to pull him away from, but there's no saving his former best friend.
"Descent" might be one of Smallville's most important episodes, as it firmly roots the two leads into their respective roles as hero and villain.
