20 Best TV Shows Of 2018

12. Killing Eve

Killing Eve Jodie Comer
BBC America

An invigorating entry into the spy genre, Killing Eve pits Sandra Oh's Eve, an MI5 officer, against Jodie Comer's Villanelle, a highly-skilled assassin. What follows is a thrilling, dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, with those positions frequently reversed, as each learns more about the other and attempts to gain the upper hand.

There's a dark, often wry humour to the show, which has a playfulness that nicely complements its suspense. There are no real heroes here, but it puts a great twist on the anti-hero trope, with a decidedly feminine bent that deals with obsession, attraction, and isn't afraid to get weird, leading to one of TV's best surprises of 2018.

The core of this is the strange relationship that forms between Eve and Villanelle, which is one of the year's most interesting and unusual hero/villain dynamics, and Comer, in particular, is incredible at flipping the switch from wild assassin to lonely woman. Of course, it all makes more sense when you realise it comes from the mind of Phoebe Waller-Bride. One of TV's most original voices right now, Waller-Bridge lets loose here, her unique, funny, and weird voice being carried through the show's eight exhilarating episodes.
