16. Abbott Elementary

Severance Adam Scott
ABC

Abbott Elementary is, in both form and execution, nothing entirely new -- a network sitcom set in a school, filmed as a mockumentary and whipping through the lives of its characters with breezy 30-minute episodes -- but thanks to creator and star Quinta Brunson, it's a show that makes the familiar feel wonderfully fresh.

Endlessly funny and brilliantly performed by Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James and Tyler James Williams, the show has technically graced us with two seasons this year (its second will end early 2023), and over 30 episodes has been an informative, amusing dissection of the American educational system, flaws and all.

At once silly and bold, hilarious and wise, to see Abbott Elementary is to love Abbott Elementary. Whether it's watching hardworking romantic Gregory fall for Brunson's second grade teacher Janine or witnessing inept principal Ava fumble through her job, every episode will leave you smiling. You ask me, we need more of that.
