13. The Chase Sequence - Garth Merenghi's Darkplace
The Show: Seemingly destined to find a cult status on whatever futuristic device we replace DVDs with, Garth Merenghi's Darkplace is a show that could only have existed during Channel 4's post-millennial "how far can we push things down the weird scale" phase. Framed as a (faux) documentary series that looked back on a (faux) horror writer and his (faux) TV series about a haunted hospital, the show used deliberately bad editing, effects, and acting. Featuring 4's now common rogues gallery (Noel Fielding, Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry et al) Darkplace might well be the most surreal show to ever grace British screens.
The Setup: As with almost every Darkplace scene - the flying plates, the eye child, scotch mist - there's no real use in trying to contextualise it. All you need to know is that there's an ape creature trying to escape the hospital, and the Darkplace team are in pursuit. Perhaps not quite showcasing the dialogue that made the show so brilliant, but perfectly illustrating the intentionally lo-fi, cheesy and cliched style that made the show so unique.
