3. The One With The Crazy Eyes
In A Hawk From A Handsaw, Chandler's volatile ex-roommate Eddie (played by Adam Goldberg) sometimes has only a tenuous grip on reality thanks to the borderline personality disorder he was diagnosed with a few years ago.
Eddie is married to Erika, Joey's former stalker (played by Brooke Shields), who also has borderline personality disorder: they met in a support group. They’re both on meds, both carefully managing their symptoms as they try to maintain their integration with the world around them.
Erika is a college literature teacher in love with Shakespeare (hence the title). Eddie thinks he works in a bar in the East Village, but really he just turned up every day and served drinks until they decided to start paying him.
The show mines the couple’s occasional skittery relationship with the real world for warm chuckles but crucially, invites us to laugh with them, not at them: this isn’t a comedy that punches down.
