The most constantly recurring guest character on Friends was, of course, the coffee shop’s long-suffering manager Gunther.

In many ways, spinning off a show called Central Perk straight after Friends finished should have been a bit of a no-brainer. The Central Perk set is iconic, second only to Monica’s apartment, and given that Chandler, Monica and Joey had moved away, it’s not like that sofa would have been in use going forward.

Of course, as far as comedy goes, Gunther himself is a bit of an unknown quantity. An oddball obsessive, he might have worked best as the eccentric foil to a whole new cast of characters, like Woody in Cheers or Kramer in Seinfeld.

But there would definitely have been some potential there. Keep the lugubrious voiceover of his innermost thoughts going as a comedic device. Have him regularly and inventively swearing in Dutch. Have guest stars almost without exception comment on his stunning attractiveness and/or sex appeal, to the obvious bafflement and increasing frustration of the other regulars.
