9. Faith Was Supposed To Commit Suicide
Rogue Slayer Faith quickly became a fan-favourite character when she turned up in Season Three to turn Buffy's comparatively simple single-Slayer life around. Across both Buffy and Angel, Faith would go on a big character arc from wayward teenager to out-and-out villain to reformed anti-hero. None of this would have happened, however, if the original plan for the character was followed through. In the actual turn of events, Faith murders Deputy Mayor Finch which sets her on her path against Buffy and to side with the evil Mayor. The original idea was that Faith would have killed herself, having been racked with guilt over the murder. Joss Whedon scrapped the plan as he was so impressed with Eliza Dushku's performance in the previous episodes. While it would have been an interesting, if bleak, area for the show to explore (Buffy looked at teenage problems with drugs, alcohol and casual sex in its time - couldn't it have looked at teen suicide as well?) you've got to be thankful that the show didn't lose such a great character so early.
