20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Buffy The Vampire Slayer
8. Anya Was Never Intended To Last So Long
Anya first appeared in Season Three of the show as an evil vengeance demon - an unlikely start for one of the show's longest-lasting characters. Armed with her brutally honest comments and love of capitalism (not to mention her fear of bunnies) Anya would go on to be a recurring character as Xander's girlfriend and then a series regular all the way until her tragic death in the last episode of the show. However, that wasn't always set in stone. Anya was initially planned as a one or two episode guest star. In fact, the original choice of actress quit the role before filming because she wanted more episodes. Once Emma Caulfield had the job, Anya's role grew (bet that other actress was kicking herself) and grew. Still, Joss Whedon planned to kill her off in the Season Five finale. In the actual episode, Anya is hurt but does not die. Asked about why he changed his mind, Whedon joked it was because Emma Caulfield kept moving in the scene so she couldn't be dead.
