20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Never Knew About True Detective

17. Comic Books Were An Influence

€œWhatever I watched, whatever I loved in 36 years of life on Earth, probably had some influence on me€ - so said Nic Pizzolatto on the first season of True Detective. Though accused of plagiarism during the first series' run, Pizzolatto actually made clear from the start who and what acted as influences. While authors like Thomas Ligotti and especially Robert W. Chambers (author of The King In Yellow) were namechecked often, inspirations less spoken of are comic book writers Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. Pizzolatto has said, €œthe first time I got excited about writing was reading comic books by Alan Moore and Grant Morrison as a kid€, and while critics noted shades of From Hell and The Invisibles in there, it would seem Pizzolatto€™s formative reading experiences seeped unconsciously into his dialogue, too. The, €œIt appears to me the dark has a lot more territory€, exchange between Marty and Rust is a line lifted almost verbatim from one of Moore€™s Top 10 comics.
