Few TV writers of the 21st century have been as celebrated as Matthew Weiner, who wrote and produced for The Sopranos' fifth and six seasons, before going on to create Mad Men.

That resume has won him nine Emmys, and also means that any project he turns his hand to deserves attention (even if it does end up being the movie Are You Here).

On TV, he recently directed the stunning penultimate episode of Orange is the New Black's fourth season, The Animals, but he's now got his own series to focus on courtesy of Amazon.

Amazon, who are increasingly big players in the original TV market but haven't yet had the breakthrough success Netflix did with the likes of House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, reportedly beat off competition from six other studios to land the project.

Not much is known, but it'll be an eight-episode anthology set in multiple locations around the world, with Weiner writing all of the episodes and directing at least half.
