14. The Kingkiller Chronicles
If you're not familiar with the epic scope of Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles trilogy, then consider a question that's been posed by fantasy fans for years now: Which will come first, Rothfuss' The Doors of Stone (the third in the series) or George R.R. Martin's The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth book in A Song of Ice and Fire.
Both created huge fantasy worlds, both published the latest book in 2011, both are keeping fans waiting, and now Rothfuss will join Martin in having a TV series based on his work - but going one better to also have a film too.
The story, which is split into two timelines - the present day, with adventurer and musician Kvothe telling his story to the Chronicler, and Kvothe's past, which makes up the majority of the books.
Lionsgate have announced ambitious plans for the books. The main series will be adapted into a film franchise, and then the TV show will explore the expanded world of the series. All of which will be overseen by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also has an option for a stage musical.
