20 Things You Totally Missed In The Walking Dead

3. George A. Romero

The Walking Dead Dawn of the Dead Kill
AMC

Like all great zombie fiction, George A Romero serves as a major influence to the world of The Walking Dead.

The teams behind the show have often gone out of their way to throw brief but brilliant references to the late horror maestro throughout the seasons.

For example, many walker designs have mirrored those found in Romero's Night of the Living Dead series, as have many of the walker kills. In season five, for example, Aaron kills a walker in just the same way as a character does in Dawn of the Dead (1978), and in season four the famous Zombie Bub from Day of the Dead (1985) can be seen when Glenn and Tara (Alanna Masterson) venture into the tunnel to find Maggie.

Also in season five, a crate identical to the box in Romero's Creepshow story "The Crate" can briefly be seen as well.

This is all easy to miss if you're unfamiliar with Romero's films, but incredibly nice to see how the show honours its biggest influence.
