20 Things You Totally Missed In The Walking Dead

12. Custer's Last Stand

Days Gone By, the show's very first episode, is a brilliant exercise in tension and terror. Waking from a coma to find the world has ended, Rick makes his way through the city, finding bodies, walkers and more as he travels.

The opening is perhaps best remembered for Rick seeing his first walkers or approaching the door that reads "Don't Open, Dead Inside", but one of the scene's best moments comes when he approaches a helicopter with a sword emblem on it.

This is actually the same insignia of General Custer's 7th Cavalry, which was entirely wiped out during the Battle of Little Bighorn. It's a brief and morbid detail which confirms that the army tried to stand against the undead, but failed in the process.
