20 TV Villain Performances That Are Practically Flawless

13. John Lithgow - Arthur Mitchell (Dexter)

Hannibal Lecter Mads
Showtime

What makes Dexter's Arthur Mitchell such an astounding villain is the fact that he's played by one of the most endearing actors in Hollywood, John Lithgow, who's best known for his appearances in various sitcoms and Oscar-nominated dramas.

As the deadly Trinity Killer, few of Lithgow's most recognisable traits are detectable. Portraying Mitchell as a consummate family man who moonlights as an indomitable serial killer, Lithgow finds unsettling balance between the man and the monster.

Using his imposing 6'4 frame to his advantage, the actor is towering in every scene, which only helps amplify his unshakable bloodlust, unpredictable violence, and dual personality.

Dexter peaked in its fourth season almost entirely because of Lithgow's presence, which looms large and threatening over every scene. He's one of our best living actors, and the Trinity Killer highlights one of his finest hours.
