20 Worst Moments In Modern Doctor Who

19. A Family Conversation (Resolution)

Doctor Who Resolution internet joke

What’s frustrating about this particular moment is that writer Chris Chibnall actually makes a really funny joke at first… only to beat you over the head with it and completely kill that momentum.

Ryan’s overly-dramatic line “What a monster”, in response to the Reconnaissance Scout Dalek shutting down all of the UK’s internet on New Year’s Day works really well, only for the gag to drag on, and on, and on, in the form of a Family Guy-esque cutaway scene in which a horrified mother proclaims “I suppose we’ll have to have a conversation”, in front of her equally-horrified kids.

The ‘How do you do, fellow kids’ energy is off the charts with this one, and it feels terribly misplaced during a part of the episode where the stakes are ramping up and we’re hurtling towards the climax.

You had your cake Chibnall, why did you have to try and eat it too!

Ellie has been part of the WhatCulture team since 2021 where she began as a freelance presenter for the WhoCulture channel. As a diehard Whovian with a BA (hons) degree in Drama and Acting, this role was the perfect opportunity for her to combine her screen presence training with her extensive Doctor Who knowledge. From there, she branched out to various other WhatCulture channels, including TrekCulture, and became a full time Content Producer/Video Presenter in 2023. Ellie is now a regular fixture on both WhoCulture and TrekCulture and has become a well respected public figure within both fandoms, building up a substantial following across her social media platforms and being given the opportunity to represent the channels and the wider communities at several industry events. Her favourite Doctor Who character is River Song and her favourite Star Trek character is Captain Janeway - which tells you everything you need to know about how she approaches her role within a generally male dominated field.
