25 Most Hotly Anticipated New TV Shows Of 2018

18. The Alienist

The Alienist
TNT

Who? Cary Fukunaga (creator), Jakob Verbruggen (director); Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, Dakota Fanning.

What? A psychological thriller set in late 1800s New York, where a series of gruesome murders of boy prostitutes has taken place. Police commissioner Teddy Roosevelt (yes, it's supposed to be that one) calls in a criminal psychologist and a newspaper illustrator to secretly investigate the crime.

Why? TNT is betting big on this one as it aims to make a real breakthrough in the scripted drama stakes, and it sounds like an intriguing premise that could make for an exciting series. There's enough there for a smart, twisty show with psychological analysis and some exploration of the gender, media, and political issues of the day, helped by a strong cast - especially Brühl in the lead role.

When & Where? January 22, TNT.
