Born William Robert Joylan Turnbull on 25th January 1956, Bill Turnbull appeared as himself in the Eleventh Doctor story The Wedding Of River Song, wherein he interviewed Simon Callow's Charles Dickens. Just go with it. Turnbull had a long career with the BBC as a news reporter, presenter, and commentator.

He was often involved in on-location reporting, including in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and in the wake of the Cumbria Shootings. He served as Washington Correspondent for several years, covering such historic cases as the O.J. Simpson trial, and the scandal that ended Bill Clinton's Presidency.

Back in the UK, outside of his regular appearances, he was a familiar face on panels and game shows. He took the hotseat on Celebrity Mastermind, choosing Beekeeping as his special subject. In fact, he was the author of a book on the subject as well. He took part in Strictly Come Dancing, finishing sixth out of twelve, despite an ankle injury.

He revealed his prostate cancer diagnosis in 2018. and continued to work in presenting alongside his former wife Sian Williams. He died on 31st August. He was 66 years old.
