During various points throughout the Eleventh Doctor's adventures, cracks in the universe appeared. These cracks were two sections of space and time touching that were never meant to touch, and while he was able to seal off a few of them, the event that caused their appearance was still going to happen. That event just so happened to be the TARDIS exploding, causing the universe to slowly collapse until it would cease to exist.
