5 Things A Sixth Season Of The Wire Could've Focused On
4. The Church
Religion still plays a significant part in American society, with 39% of the population claiming to attend church on a weekly basis compared to 12% of their counterparts in the UK. This figure rises to 53% amongst African-Americans, who make up 65% of Baltimore's population. From these statistics, it can be assumed that church attendance is considerable in many of the city's communities, though few of the characters within them were ever shown to the particularly religious over the course of the series.
Given that just one recurring character, The Deacon, had any explicit links to the church, its introduction into the show would've offered a wealth of options for writers to explore, including the church's place in modern society and the often difficult relationships between different religious communities, even those of the same faith.
An analysis of the church's darker elements would also have been a possibility, given that Baltimore hasn't been exempt from the Catholic sexual abuse scandals that have been rampant in recent years. An investigation into such a scandal within the series' world could've easily involved established characters from the worlds of law enforcement, education, journalism and politics, creating a season-long story arc.
