Considering how huge Jurassic Park was in the 90's it might be a little surprising to find out that this is the first official cartoon series based on the franchise. There were actually plans for an animated series following the original film but Spielberg scrapped the idea when he'd had his fill of merchandising.

Ultimately, it might be a good thing that the 90's cartoon never came to pass, because of the iron grip that standards and practices held on most network animation. Strict rules were - and in many cases still are - in place which keep American cartoons sanitised to the point where the unambiguous death of a character is for the most part forbidden ground.

Fortunately for the viewers of this show, Spielberg decided that it was important for the dinosaurs to actually eat people. A decision that in the 90's would have been a pretty hard sell for a kid's cartoon.

Ultimately, Netflix has proven with some of it's other animated shows like Troll Hunters and Dragon Prince that it is a place which prioritises story over censorship. So, this series is allowed to keep the stakes as high as in the films and ultimately give itself the chance to feel like one of the movies.

Characters specifically die, one of the main cast is presumed dead by the end of season one. The corpses of workers litter the island and people get eaten. There is no ambiguity, no euphemisms and that makes the series fit like any other instalment in the franchise.

Early Ray Mixon hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
