6 Reasons You Should Have Watched Netflix's Daybreak
1. Exceptionally Well-Written Characters
Daybreak may present itself as one of those annoyingly loud in-your-face comedies that thinks it knows more than it actually does, but that's only because it genuinely does. The reason being that, underneath all of the monologues, swearing and colourful personalities are surprisingly deep characters.
Sure, Josh's goal is intentionally derivative of what we've seen before, but that ultimately serves him well, giving viewers a chance to get to know what the real Josh Wheeler was like - you know, the one before he gained all of this post-apocalyptic confidence. The same goes for Wesley, Angelica and Turbo Bro Jock - all of whom possess characteristics that seem oddly familiar and yet, below the surface are highly original and thoroughly engaging.
In a world full of caricatures, these characters are anything but. They may behave off-the-wall and, at times, even get a little too in-your-face, but everyone has a story - and their stories are engaging ones - as the backdrop highlights the pressures that young people face when trying to fit in (even in a zombie apocalypse). They're complex, relatable and well-rounded people just doing what they can to get by - and that's a story worth watching.
To go back to how clever the show is, the writers use its overarching sense of comedy as a tool to drive home the realism of the points they are trying to make - and the result speaks for itself through these well-rounded characters.
