6 Ups And 3 Downs From Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 3.6 — The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail
8. UP — High-Def Death And Destruction
"May you die well," as the Klingons say. Failing that, at least make sure things look pretty. From the very beginning of The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail, we were spoilt for stunning visuals. Rendered in (ultra) high definition, the explosion of the uninhabited Helicon Gamma was a sight to behold. Let's hope those who did shuffle off… on the Farragut got to look out the window first.
Post-opening credits, the Enterprise warps in, phasers firing at the larger pieces of planetary rubble, knocking others out the way with its shields. Meanwhile, it appears as though a giant clawed hand has run through the Farragut's saucer section. Rarely is destruction so beautiful, bathed in orange and blue. Rarely is space so dynamically deadly.
The rest of the episode makes relatively sparing use of CGI exterior shots, not least because of the expense, but also, no doubt, because repeated stimulus leads to habituation. In this case, we hardly get used to, and certainly not bored of, seeing the Farragut in particular, either adrift, at warp, or flying with no nacelles.
