3. Bad Things Happen To Good People

Drama is a very important thing if you're making a story. Not everything has to be good or nice to the characters if you want the audience to feel something towards the characters. While Friends certainly had its share of sad moments and some of the characters had to go through bad things during the show (Monica and Chandler's inability to procreate was something very sad) none of them had to go through something as devastating as some of us have to live through. And even when they face things that should be considered very sad and dramatic (the kind of things that would bring down a normal person) they just shrug it off and move on like nothing had happened. Remember that episode in which Rachel and Phoebe lost their apartment? Something like that would destroy a person entirely, it would make them feel completely lost even if they have insurance and a place to go. Things like that leave a big impact and they gave more importance to things that didn't deserve it. The same thing can be said when Ross lost his apartment after he broke up with Emilly. Granted it is a comedy series, so they can't have something as serious as one of the main character's love interest dying or one of them having an accident that leave them incapacitated, but they could have at least tried to do something that would leave the same impact. As an adult (or even as a child) you have to get used to the fact that it doesn't matter how nice you are with others, or how much you effort on doing the right things, sometimes bad things would happen, and there's nothing you can do about it.
