Quality Western TV shows don't come along all that often, and while Netflix's Godless is no Deadwood, it's a fantastic homage to the era when John Wayne was rarely seen on screen without a cowboy hat and colt pistol.
Buoyed by strong performances by its two leads Jack O'Connell and Jeff Daniels, the miniseries follows a young gunslinger on the run from a fearsome outlaw. Viewers will find themselves exploring beautiful vistas on horseback and caught in the middle of gunslinging set pieces.
Although Godless is every inch a traditional Western, it sets itself apart in a testosterone-soaked genre with strong female characters. Michelle Dockery and Merritt Wever wrestle the spotlight from O'Connell and Daniels at every opportunity.
At only seven episodes long, season one can be binged in an afternoon, but it will more than fill the void left by Justified and Hell on Wheels during that time.
